California Dream’n: #4 Terp’s Field Hockey Dominates on West Coast Trip

The fourth-ranked Maryland field hockey beat UC Davis, 6-1, in Berkeley Monday afternoon to wrap up a dominant three-game California trip.

Over their three games on the West Coast, the Terrapins (3-0) outscored their opponents 14-1, led by five goals by junior Nike Lorenz and four from senior tri-captain Linnea Gonzales. Lorenz was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Monday after her first week as a Terrapin.

“Just a powerful weekend for us, getting the sweep of all three games and getting everyone playing,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Hannah Bond really stepped up and was the ultimate defender, counter attacking and scored a beautiful goal. We’re just really pleased with everyone playing and we’re excited to open our home season Friday night.”

Freshman Bibi Donraadt scored twice in Monday’s match. She notched her first career goal with a score off a pass from senior Melissa Wilken in the 14thminute.

Just under five minutes later, Gonzales scored her first of the day when she buried a shot off of Bodil Keus’ initial chance off a penalty corner.

In the 22nd minute, Keus scored off another penalty corner to make it a three-goal lead for Maryland. Senior Sabrina Rhodes and junior Madison Maguireassisted. Maryland led 3-0 at half.

In the 51st minute, Bond scored her first goal as a Terrapin when she capitalized on a straight-on look.

Two minutes later, Gonzales made it a 5-0 lead when she tapped in a pass from Wilken.

Donraadt added her second goal of the day when she scored off a scrum in the circle with 35 seconds to play.

The Aggies (2-1) got on the board with eight seconds remaining when Carli Colyer scored.

The Terrapins outshot UC Davis, 19-5 and had six penalty corners to two. Starting goalkeeper Sarah Holliday notched a save.

Maryland was tabbed as the No. 4 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches Preseason poll released Aug. 21. The Terrapins have started the year in the top 10 in each of the last 20 years, since 1999.

Gonzales, junior Kelee Lepage and sophomore Brooke DeBerdine earned Big Ten Preseason Honors earlier this week.

Next, the Terrapins will host No. 3 Duke, No. 12 Northwestern and No. 13 Boston College next weekend for the B1G/ACC Cup at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Duke and Northwestern face off in Friday’s first match at 4 p.m., then Maryland plays Boston College at 7 p.m. The Eagles play the Wildcats at 11 a.m. Sunday, with the Terps taking on the Blue Devils at 2 p.m.
