Terps Have Unfinished Business

The second-seeded Maryland field hockey team (22-2) will take on top-seeded North Carolina (22-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. in the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship at Louisville’s Trager Stadium.

• This is Maryland’s 24th straight NCAA Tournament appearance – the longest active streak in the country. The Terps have made 30 NCAA Tournament appearances and are 63-22 (.741) all-time in NCAA Tournament games, which is the highest Tournament winning percentage in the nation. Head coach Missy Meharg is 59-21 (.738) all-time in NCAA Tournament games, the best percentage among active Division I coaches.

• The Terps beat No. 3 Princeton, 1-0, in overtime Friday in the NCAA Semifinals. The two teams stayed locked in a scoreless battle for over 77 minutes, then freshman Bibi Donraadt split two defenders to bring the ball into the circle and scored the game winner.

• This is Maryland’s second straight NCAA Championship game appearance and 13th overall. The Terrapins have won eight NCAA titles, seven under Meharg, in 1987, 1993, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011. The Terps are 8-4 all-time in the NCAA Championship game and they are 8-1 in the NCAA Semifinals and Finals in Louisville. The Terrapins won the 2005, 2008 and 2011 NCAA titles at Trager Stadium.

• North Carolina owns the all-time series over Maryland, 37-26. This is their first meeting since the NCAA Quarterfinals in College Park in 2016. The Tar Heels won 3-0.

• Donraadt is leading Maryland with 15 goals this season and Linnea Gonzales and Nike Lorenz each have 14. Maryland has 10 scorers with multiple goals and 15 total Terps have found the goal line.

• Senior goalkeeper Sarah Holliday is No. 5 on Maryland field hockey’s all-time list with 259 career saves. She has more saves than any Maryland goalkeeper since Irene Horvat in 1994.

• Meharg is in her 31st season as head coach of the Terrapins. She’s led them to a record of 565-137-9 (.801), seven NCAA titles, 25 conference titles and 18 Final Fours.

• Linnea Gonzales was named Big Ten Player of the Year, sophomore Bodil Keus was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Donraadt was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year Wednesday. Keus and Gonzales made the All-Big Ten First Team, Nike Lorenz made the All-Big Ten Second Team and Olivia Reiter was recognized with a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

• Top-seeded North Carolina is 22-0 this year and beat Wake Forest, 4-1, Friday in the NCAA Semifinals.
• Erin Matson is leading the Tar Heels with 19 goals this season.
• North Carolina owns the all-time series over Maryland, 37-26. This is their first meeting since the NCAA Quarterfinals in College Park in 2016. The Tar Heels won 3-0.
• Maryland is 4-5 all-time vs. North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament.
