One day after capping a weekend of shutout soccer, junior defender Baseley McClaskey was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The Grand Junction, Colo. native played a leading role in the Mids going 1-0-1 with a pair of shutout decisions over the weekend.
McClaskey was a key contributor on both ends of the field on Friday night versus Stetson as she broke a scoreless tie with the Hatters in the 56th minute on a direct kick goal from just outside the 18-yard box. That goal would stand up as the only score in the contest as Navy won 1-0. Two days later on Sunday, she played in 107 of 110 minutes in a double overtime 0-0 tie versus Maryland. For the weekend, McClaskey was on the field for 188 of 200 possible minutes.
As a unit, Navy’s defense has recorded three straight shutouts and have a combined 0.47 goals against average through four games. The Mids are one of 24 teams nationally with three or more shutouts through two weeks of action.
This is the third career weekly award for McClaskey and the second for the Navy women’s soccer program in 2018 as fellow defender Kayla Robinson earned the Defensive Player of the Week nod last Monday.
The Mids will be back in action this weekend with a pair of non-conference road games in North Carolina. Navy will go head-to-head with Gardner-Webb on Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on Western Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m.
