The Navy women’s soccer team notched its second victory in a row as the Mids posted a clean sheet 1-0 decision over Stetson on Friday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Mids (2-1) used a game-winning goal by Baseley McClaskey (Jr., Grand Junction, Colo.) in the 56thminute to secure the victory over the Hatters (2-1).
“We played well today,” remarked head coach Carin Gabarra. “We used our depth well and played a lot of people a good number of minutes. I thought our possession was good and we moved the ball well, but we have to get better in the attacking third with our choices, our decision-making on finishing and our service. All of those little pieces have to get better as the season progresses.

“Our defensive shape was tight, our one-on-one defending was good and we were very disciplined with what we set out to do. Our defending was good today. We did a good job of keeping a quality team in front of us. We need to do a better job of transitioning and moving forward to get scoring chances.”
The Mids came out in the first half looking to immediately take the lead as they attained three corner kicks over the opening 12 minutes. The team’s first high percentage opportunity to go up 1-0 came in the 13thminute when Hannah Miller(Fr, Mattawan, Mich.) broke out into space and rocketed a shot past the goalie, but right off the edge of the far post. A lull in the offensive action occurred for the next 20-plus minutes as both teams’ defenses made their presence felt. In the waning minutes first half, Regan McQuain (Jr., Lafayette, Calif.) and Alex Jackson (Jr., Centennial, Colo.) both put shots on goal to test Emily Plotz, the Hatters’ goalkeeper.
Coming out after halftime, Stetson registered its first shot of the contest in the 49th minute. Withstanding that minor threat, Navy turned its attention to breaking the 0-0 tie. A little over six minutes later at 55:54, McClaskey calmly approached a free-position kick from just outside the 18-yard box and hammered home a shot to the back of the net.
The Mids continued looking for an insurance goal over the rest of the second half as the team had three strong scoring chances in the final 34 minutes. In the 66thminute, Kayla Robinson (Sr., Evanston, Ill.) got the ball on an overlapping run and took a shot that just arched over the goal. Navy kept the pressure on as Robinson and Karli Sottung (Sr., Westfield, N.J.) put shots on frame in the 73rdand 74thminutes. The last best shot for the Mids to go up 2-0 came courtesy of a Jackson header off of an Eleanor Pratt (Sr., New Orleans, La.) corner kick at 74:44. Jackson connected on the cross and powered a header off the crossbar.
