The Navy men’s team enters the year after compiling a 20-12 overall record during the 2017-18 season. That was Navy’s highest win total since the 2000 team won 23 games. The Mids placed third in the Patriot League last year to notch their highest regular season placement since also finishing in third place in 2009.
Navy will open its 2018-19 season with a Nov. 6 game at Old Dominion (25-7 overall, 15-3 in Conference USA last year). It will mark the first game between the teams since the 1981-82 season. The Mids then return home for the Veterans Classic game against the Terps (19-13, 8-10 Big Ten). That game will be the first in the series since the 1985 NCAA Tournament and the first to be played in Annapolis in 50 seasons.
The home opener starts a stretch of Navy playing five out of six games in Alumni Hall. Next up for the Mids will be a Nov. 14 home game against Coppin State (5-27, 5-11 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). The teams met last season with Navy emerging with a 70-53 victory. Another home game on Nov. 18 against Bryant (3-28, 2-16 Northeast Conference) follows in what is also a return game from the 2017-18 season. Navy defeated the Bulldogs, 79-71, last season. The Mids will then take to the road for the short drive to Baltimore on Nov. 20 for a game at Morgan State (13-19, 7-9 MEAC). Navy posted a 66-59 victory over Morgan State this past season.
Two more home games follow for Navy. The Mids will first play host to Liberty (22-15, 9-9 Big South, will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season) on Nov. 28 in the first game between the teams since the 2000-01 season, then will face Brown (11-16, 4-10 Ivy League) on Dec. 1. The game between the Mids and the Bears, which will be the first since the 2006-07 season, is slated for a 4 p.m. start but will move to 7 p.m. should the Navy football team also be playing host to the championship game of the American Athletic Conference on that same day.
Navy will close out the 2018 calendar and its non-league slate with four-straight road games. That span begins with a Dec. 5 game at Delaware (14-19, 6-12 Colonial Athletic Association) in what will be a rematch of a game played in Annapolis this past season. Navy defeated the Blue Hens last year, 82-76. The fifth and final return game for Navy from last season features the Mids playing at Lipscomb (23-10, 10-4 Atlantic Sun) on Dec. 9. The Bison defeated the Mids, 73-64, in Annapolis last year on their way to winning the Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament titles and advancing to the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Next on Navy’s slate is a Dec. 21 game at George Mason (16-17, 9-9 Atlantic 10). The teams will be meeting for the first time since the 1990-91 season when both programs were members of the Colonial Athletic Association. The final non-league game for Navy will be played Dec. 30 when the Mids go on the road to face Cornell (12-16, 6-8 Ivy League) in the first pairing of the teams since the 1953-54 season.
Navy will open its Patriot League schedule with games at home on Jan. 3 against Colgate and Jan. 6 against Holy Cross. The game against the Mids and the Crusaders will be followed by the Navy women’s team playing Lehigh.
The higher-seeded team playing in the game will play host to each round of the 2019 Patriot League Tournament. Those games will be played March 5 (first round: #7 vs. #10, #8 vs. #9), March 7 (quarterfinals), March 10 (semifinals) and March 13 (final).
