Maryland All-American Wrestler Joins World Team

Senior Youssif Hemida earned a spot on the U23 World Team after winning the 125 KG bracket at the U23 World Team Trials on Sunday.

Hemida picked up a pair of wins over Matt Stencel in the best-of-three championship round to clinch a spot on the squad, which will head to Romania for the world championships in November.

The 2018 NCAA All-American posted a 7-0 record in the event, including an 11-0 technical fall victory in his second championship bout. Hemida outscored his opponents 79-19 over the course of the tournament.

“I’m very proud of how Youssif is wrestling,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “He is setting goals for himself, making a plan, and executing. It’s good to see him enjoy the fruits of his labor.”

Redshirt senior Alfred Bannister also impressed for the Terrapins, earning All-American honors at 70 KG after his sixth-place finish.

Sophomore Kyle Cochran and redshirt junior David-Brian Whisler tallied three wins in the tournament, while Jahi Jones added a pair of victories. Josh Ugalde and Peter Tedesco each earned a win in the tournament.
